ECT: Lessons Learned

I received treatment through ect over several years of my life. And, along the way, I have learned things about how to manage it and I would like to share my experiences with you.

When I first began treatment through ect, I went inpatient and received about 8-12 treatments over a three week period. Then, I was released and I began to maintain at a frequency of 1 week. This was the fall of 2009. I decided to take a college class on campus. And, it went very well. I felt that I had made progress that fall. So, the next step was to decrease my ect frequency to two weeks. I also decided to take a more difficult class that spring. And I was quite surprised about how difficult it was to move from one week to two.

First Lesson: I recommend that you ‘either’ decrease your frequency ‘or’ increase your workload. But, do not do both at the same time. If you are maintaining your frequency, then build. But, if you are decreasing your frequency, do not add more until you are quite comfortable at the new frequency.
